Startup profile - Buy1Page

What is your company name? Buy1Page

Where are you based? London, United Kingdom

How would you describe your company to the head of digital from a publishing company? Search for & browse non-fiction books (like in a bookstore) and buy individual pages - all at just a few pence per page. Buy only the pages you want, from anywhere in a book. Or across books and put together your own custom booklet - Pick N Mix for books. See what parts of books others like, share pages/custom booklets with friends. Get the gist of a book from our curated collection.

Why would a publisher want to work with you? What's in it for them? * 65% of net revenue to publisher * Opens up a new market for non-fiction books - the time and cost sensitive user * Provides valuable editorial and marketing insights to publishers as to which parts of a book are most read and how the book interacts with other books * Dampens demand for piracy due to the low cost of access * Already have one publisher signed up and in discussions with 8 others

In simple terms, how is your company going to make money? We operate a freemium model as follows: - Each user gets 10 free pages per month - Pages above that will be charged at a minimum of £0.20p per page - Once a user base is established, we will also charge advertising revenue and for "windowshop" displays where publishers have the chance to promote books/sections

Where is your funding coming from? Currently we are self funded.

What date did/will you launch? February 2012

How would you describe your company to a book-loving friend? Buy1Page lets you do exactly that - search through our catalogue for relevant/interesting books, browse a book like you would in a bookstore and if it looks interesting - buy it - a page at a time. Our Pick N Mix for books lets you put exactly the right mix of pages within a book or across books. Share interesting pages with others via facebook, twitter or email. No time to read an entire non-fiction book? See our curated section to get the gist/most interesting part of a book.

What are your plans to give your company exposure? Who is your target audience? Our target audience is primarily students and young professionals. We have a demonstration scheduled at the University of Cambridge (UK) in January and are launching a marketing campaign aimed at the UK universities in April. We are also using Google SEO for our catalogue of books. Our launch publishers have agreed to provide us links from their websites, targeted email to their mailing lists and mentions on their twitter and Facebook account as well as press releases.

Your vision for your company in three year's time? Intangibles: To be the destination website for someone who has 10 minutes to kill to see interesting curated/recommended sections of non-fiction books To provide users a forum to showcase the best bits of non-fiction books Tangibles: To have at least 40,000 paying users To have a non-fiction book catalogue of at least 20,000 books

What is your end game? To create a sustainable and profitable cash flow from the business.

Three things you've learned from launching a startup? 1. It's surprising how much you can achieve on a modest budget. 2. You need to have a strong stomach 3. Publishing conferences are amazingly efficient places to do business
