Introducing the PocketBook 302

The PocketBook 302 is the touch-screen sister of the PocketBook 360, from
Ukranian-based Green Reader and on sale in the UK through
www.greenreader.co.uk.

Aesthetically the PB302 looks very chic indeed; it has a minimalist design
with a six-inch responsive touch screen, or you can use the buttons to the
side of the screen to navigate.

As an e-reader it really does do the job perfectly well, books load easily
and titles can be organised in the library as you see fit. A negative from a
straight e-reader point of view is that the screen is a tad reflective,
somewhat undermining its use of E-Ink technology. Another downside, given
that there is web functionality is its monochrome—excuse me 16 bit shades of
grey—display. A colour screen would better serve the needs of the next
generation of e-books.

The PB302 comes with microSD card, headphone jack, 2 USB ports,
replaceable battery, accelerometer, Bluetooth, and Wifi as well as WPA and
WEP security. It can be used to store both photos and music and according to
Green Reader the “device will last for about two month without recharge in
the reading mode.”

The PB302 really comes into its own however with the use of apps: it comes
pre-loaded with 9 apps (a calculator, chess, solitaire, clock, dictionary,
Snake, scribble, Sudoku, and a web browser) but you can install more. The
web browser works really well for light internet use, and is perfect for
on-the-go browsing.  It does have trouble displaying text entry parts of web
pages properly (ensuring it is not ideal for opening emails or working from
home) but as the PB302 is pitched clearly in the e-reader camp, and not the
tablet camp, it seems wrong to fault it too strongly on this. The other
strong point of the PB302 is the presence of PocketNews, which uses Adobe
Reader Mobile and FBReader technology. The device contacts Pocketbook’s
servers for updates, rather than pulling feeds itself, ensuing a speedy
service.

All in all, at £235 the PB302 is brilliant value for money. With enough
technological scope to please even the biggest e-book fan, providing
everything you could want from an e-reader and a little bit extra.

The PocketBook 302 looks

petes's picture

The PocketBook 302 looks really nice.  I have seen the PocketBook 360 and liked what it had to offer.  I wonder if they did any multivariate testing when deciding on a size for the PB302? I love the price! I thnk these will be popular items.
