I'm pleased to say that we have teamed up with Peter Cox of Litopia and Redhammer fame to broadcast live on the internet a discussion of whatever it is Apple announces at its 'education' event taking place in New York tomorrow. If the rumours are true then the announcement could have huge implications for academic and textbook publishers, and probably also for all other publishers.
As Peter puts in his blog: "Apple’s announcement on Thursday will have implications far beyond the insular world of textbook publishing. Many major publishers use their highly-profitable educational divisions to effectively subsidize trade publishing… which means authors like you. Sucking money out of the wider publishing ecosphere will impact everyone, not just textbook publishers.
The other thing, of course, that Apple are threatening to do is to launch a set of software tools that will be the 'GarageBand for e-books'. Again, if so – this could have a revolutionary impact on every author: midlist, toplist or nolist."
Hosted by Peter Cox, the panel will me; from New York, publishing legend MJ Rose; Sage's digital sales manager Huw Alexander; industry commentator Martyn Daniels... and more yet to be confirmed.
We'll be on from 8pm over here, and then we'll post the podcast of the show soon after here.
