Keeping sight of your target market

Denise Dwyer, Development Officer Access to Publishing at RNIB talks us through what publishers should be considering: a big political memoir was published recently to lots of comment and column inches. The day after publication I came across a post on an online forum by a keen reader who is blind. He would have loved, he said, to have been able to buy an electronic version of the book the previous day, so he could read it at the same time as everyone else and join in the debate. Read more »

As the US ebook market develops, UK publishers may find some sales growth

Given that, it seemed untenable to work in publishing and not to have experienced this important development first hand, so just a couple of weeks ago I finally caved in and ordered one. Read more »

We'll all lose money. And then we'll learn

Last week, Kindle content head David Naggar appeared on a panel alongside Macmillan chief executive John Sargent, Google's Roland Lange, and long-time Writers House agent Simon Lipskar, to discuss – what else? – "the future of the book."

The event was organized by William Morris-Endeavor agent Eric Simonoff for the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

"What happens when the physical bookstore experience disappears?" Simonoff enquired. Read more »

A recipe for success?

Recipe taken from the Publishing Almanac 2010; Take a handful of wistful nostalgia and mix with a pinch of regret. Work in a fistful of stubbornness - being careful not to look at the actual mixture. Sprinkle uncertainty and doubt on top. Place in financial constraints and pop it in the oven pre-heated to miltonian temperatures. Close your eyes, wait an indefinite amount of time and hope for the best. When ready, the strategy cake should have a firm but uncertain texture accompanied by that new book smell.
